Palms are everywhere in Central Florida, from HOA entrances and pool decks to resort grounds and front yards. They look best when they are trimmed the right way, at the right time. Trim too much and you can weaken a healthy palm for years. Trim too little and dead fronds, seed pods and flower stalks start to look messy and can become a hazard in a storm.

Here is a simple guide to when and how to trim palm trees in Orlando and the surrounding area.

The Short Answer: Trim When Fronds Are Dead, Not Green

Palms do not need to be trimmed on a strict calendar. The best rule is to remove fronds once they are completely brown and dead. Green fronds, and even yellowing ones, are still feeding the palm. Many Florida palms pull nutrients like potassium out of older fronds as they fade, so cutting them early can starve the tree.

For most properties, that works out to one or two trimmings a year. Fast-growing palms or palms near walkways and pools may need attention more often.

Good Times of Year to Trim in Central Florida

Avoid the “Hurricane Cut”

You have probably seen palms trimmed down to a few fronds pointing straight up. This is often called a hurricane cut or “pineapple” cut, and it does more harm than good. It removes the green fronds the palm needs for food, can leave the trunk with a thin, pinched section later on, and does not make the palm safer in a storm.

A good rule of thumb is to leave the fronds that sit between the “9 o’clock and 3 o’clock” positions and above. Remove what is dead or drooping below that line.

What a Proper Palm Trim Includes

Professional crews also avoid climbing healthy palms with spikes, which leave wounds in the trunk that never heal. Ladders, lifts and pole saws are safer for the palm.

Signs Your Palm Needs More Than a Trim

If you notice any of these, have the palm looked at before trimming. Sometimes the right answer is fertilizer, and sometimes a damaged palm needs to be removed.
